WHEN TO SERVICE

Signs Your Watch May Need an Overhaul

A service interval of roughly three to five years is often used as a guide, but the appropriate timing depends on the movement, usage, and storage environment. Please consult us if you notice any of the following.

Accuracy has changed

The watch has begun gaining or losing noticeably more time than before.

It stops unexpectedly

The watch stops even after winding, wearing, or replacing the battery.

Power reserve is shorter

A mechanical watch no longer runs as long as it previously did.

Crown operation feels unusual

Winding, setting the time, or operating pushers feels rough or heavy.

Moisture or fog is visible

Condensation inside the crystal may indicate water ingress and requires prompt inspection.

Several years have passed

Even without a clear symptom, aged lubricants and seals may need inspection.

ABOUT OVERHAUL

What Is a Watch Overhaul?

Lubricants inside a movement can deteriorate or dry over time. Continued use in this condition may increase friction, affect accuracy, and accelerate wear. An overhaul restores the movement to a properly serviced condition and allows worn or damaged parts to be identified.

01

Maintain Accuracy

The movement is adjusted and measured after reassembly to confirm its operating condition.

02

Reduce Internal Wear

Old lubricant and contamination are removed before the required points are lubricated again.

03

Identify Problems Early

Individual components can be inspected for wear, damage, corrosion, and other concerns.

FAQ

Watch Overhaul in Yoyogi, Tokyo — FAQ

Answers about watch overhaul prices, symptoms, quartz and mechanical movements, vintage watches, parts, water resistance, warranties, and visits to CONTÉVANOU near Hatsudai, Sangubashi, and Shinjuku.

What does a watch overhaul include?

A standard overhaul includes disassembly, cleaning, lubrication, reassembly, adjustment, and accuracy testing. Parts are repaired or replaced when required.

What is the difference between a watch repair and an overhaul?

A repair addresses a specific fault, while an overhaul services the movement as a whole through disassembly, cleaning, lubrication, reassembly, adjustment, and testing. We inspect the watch and recommend the work appropriate to its condition.

How often should a watch be overhauled?

A common guideline is approximately every three to five years, but the appropriate interval varies by brand, movement, use, and manufacturer guidance. Please consult us if the watch loses accuracy, stops, or feels unusual when winding.

What signs indicate that a watch may need an overhaul?

Possible signs include gaining or losing more time than usual, stopping unexpectedly, reduced power reserve, resistance or unusual noise when winding, and condensation inside the crystal. Stop using the watch and request an inspection if moisture is visible.

How much does a watch overhaul cost?

Reference prices start at ¥34,000 including tax for quartz watches and ¥44,000 including tax for mechanical watches. Vintage and antique watches require an individual estimate. Parts and additional work are charged separately.

Is the overhaul estimate free?

Yes. We inspect the watch and provide a free estimate. Repair work begins only after you approve the price.

How long does an overhaul take?

The estimate normally takes about two weeks. Service generally takes about three weeks to one and a half months, depending on the watch, condition, and parts availability.

Can a watch overhaul be completed on the same day?

No. An overhaul requires disassembly, cleaning, assembly, adjustment, and final testing, so the watch must be left with us. The estimate normally takes about two weeks, followed by the repair period after approval.

Can you overhaul a watch purchased from another retailer?

Yes. We accept overhaul and repair consultations for watches purchased from other retailers. We confirm service availability after inspecting the watch.

Do quartz watches need an overhaul?

Yes, in some cases. If battery replacement does not restore operation or the movement has contamination, corrosion, or mechanical wear, movement service, repair, or replacement may be required.

Can you service chronographs and complicated mechanical watches?

We assess chronographs and other complicated watches individually. Their construction and number of components may increase the price and turnaround time, which we explain in the estimate.

Can vintage and antique watches be overhauled?

Yes. Vintage and antique watches are assessed individually because movement condition, previous repairs, and parts availability vary. We explain the feasible repair and restoration options after inspection.

Which watch brands do you accept?

We assess a wide range of Japanese and international brands, including Rolex, Cartier, Omega, TAG Heuer, IWC, Seiko, Citizen, MINASE, Tutima Glashütte, RAYMOND WEIL, and many others. Vintage watches and special constructions are assessed individually.

Can genuine manufacturer parts be used?

Where available, genuine parts can be arranged. If a required part is difficult to source, we explain repair, restoration, custom-fabrication, or manufacturer-service options before proceeding.

What happens if replacement parts are no longer available?

We first confirm whether the existing part can be repaired or whether custom fabrication or manufacturer service is possible. We explain the available options and cost before carrying out additional work.

Is water-resistance testing included with an overhaul?

Water-resistance testing and gasket replacement are performed when required and may be quoted separately. The original water-resistance performance may not be restorable on some vintage watches or cases with deterioration.

Can the case or bracelet be refinished during an overhaul?

Yes. Case and bracelet cleaning or refinishing can be discussed and quoted separately. We confirm your preference before work because polishing changes the existing surface and edges.

Is there a warranty after the repair?

Repairs completed through our service include a six-month repair warranty. The coverage depends on the repair performed.
